The industry’s leading sustainability champions convened at Newport World Resorts for the Philippine Sustainability Movement 2023. The Marriott Grand Ballroom (MGB) played host to the stewards of the environment to explore avenues of collaboration and expand collective impact for a sustainable future.
On June 16, over 30 organizations from the environment and tourism sectors came together to mark a historic milestone with the event’s return to the MGB. Formerly called Sustainable Seafood Week in 2017 during its launch, the Philippine Sustainability Movement has since expanded into a more comprehensive and inclusive drive for the greatest good of the planet.
Advocating for the promotion of sustainable seafood and plastic reduction that affect the aquatic environment, the event led by SeaTrace International prepared rousing talks from industry leaders and NGOs. On the side of the hospitality sector, top chefs from various brands and properties showcased their culinary prowess with sumptuous offerings featuring the freshest catch from sustainable seafood sources.
Kingson Sian, Newport World resorts’ President and CEO, welcomed the delegates to the main event saying “Sustainability is not just the responsibility of governments, international and local organizations, and big companies. It is everyone’s responsibility. That’s why we call our program “I Love Earth.” It is a commitment that starts with oneself, and comes from the heart. We have no Planet B, and we all have to protect this one through the choices we make in our daily lives.”
At Newport World Resorts, commitment to the planet and advocating for sustainable living is taken to heart with the property-wide initiative, I LOVE Earth (ILE). ILE is the consolidation of efforts by the different brands within the property to sustainability efforts into one innovative program. The projects under the overall program are organized under the “H.E.A.R.T.” pillars, representing the following: Healthy, Responsible and Sustainable Sourcing; Environmental Impact (Energy, Water, Air, Waste); Active Engagement, Benchmarking, Certification; Reform, Reduce, Recycle, Repurpose; and Transform through Teaching, Training, and Technology.
The recent event for the Philippine Sustainability Movement highlights ILE’s Healthy, Responsible and Sustainable Sourcing pillar. Seeing the importance of supporting local communities and industries to ensure that they are able to earn a living in a sustainable manner, Newport World Resorts made it a part of the ILE goals to buy products like chocolates, coffee, and healthy cage-free eggs from local farmers. Another major initiative is sustainable seafood, where products are sourced from certified sustainable fisheries and aquaculture suppliers.
ILE thrives because the people behind the movement are fully committed to the cause. ILE Council Chairman, Marriott International Multi-property Vice President – Philippines and Marriott Manila General Manager Bruce Winton shares how they turn commitment into action, “We believe that what gets measured, gets done. What we also want to do is really involve all of our stakeholders, both within our own community, and within the industry, and work together to commit to achieving progress towards sustainable development goals.”
