PTFoMS , PAO sign agreement to improve welfare, safeguard rights of media

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) signed two new agreements with the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) to improve the welfare of journalists and provide them more legal protection.

PTFoMS Executive Director Paul M. Gutierrez said the said accords are in line with the marching orders of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. to safeguard the rights of media practitioners.

“Our sitting together with PAO to sign these agreements today is a clear message that the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is serious in promoting not only the welfare but also in protecting the life, liberty and security of all media workers thru a whole-of-government approach,” Gutierrez said in a statement.

Under the first Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), PAO will help PTFoMs in organizing and holding hybrid nationwide “media summits” and training for media practitioners on ethical journalism and safe work environment.

Among those being eyed to serve as speakers in the summit are Presidential Communication Office Secretary Cheloy Velicaria-Garafil, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla and PAO Chief Persidida Acosta.

Also signed is the MOA, wherein PAO will provide legal aid to media practitioners on work-related cases, particularly libel and cyber libel and other forms of legal aid.

The PTFoMs and PAO also agreed to advocate for media-related policy and legal reforms as well as strengthen the awareness of reporters on their legal rights and responsibilities.

Acosta lauded the newly signed agreements, which she said will ensure all sectors of society are given government support and assistance.
