FULLY-INOCULATED jobseekers may soon have a higher chance of getting hired under the proposed Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) policy to give employers discretion to hire based on the vaccination status of applicants.
In a virtual press briefing on Wednesday, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) disclosed there is now such a pending IATF resolution, which is expected to further increase the number of workers who are vaccinated against Covid-19.
“As its stands now the term used [in the resolution] is ‘may’ so it is still not mandatory,” said Labor Assistant Secretary Dominique R. Tutay, in explaining about the resolution.
Instead, she said, employers may use the vaccination status as one of the criteria when selecting a qualified applicant.
Once finalized by the IATF, Tutay said DOLE will issue guidance for the implementation of the said policy.
DOLE issued the statement after President Duterte said in his public address on Tuesday night that it is “legal” for employers to hire vaccinated workers over those who are not.
“If you are not vaccinated, you will not be hired. I think that is legal,” Duterte said.
He, however, stressed employers could not fire workers who refuse to get Covid-19 vaccines.
Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III had made a similar policy pronouncement last month, which drew the ire of labor leaders, who tagged it as a form of discrimination.
